Palm Trees: The Best Part of Costal Living

What can I say? I have loved the palm tree for as long as I can remember. When I left my Florida home in 1989, the palm wasn’t on my mind. I was focused on the road ahead—travel, new experiences, the thrill of the unknown. In my young mind, palm trees just existed everywhere. They were part of the backdrop, nothing remarkable—until they were not there anymore.

Native Florida palms are not the prettiest in the palm tree world, but they have always been my favorite.

As I began to settle into a new life abroad, I found myself looking for palm trees. To my surprise, I found them—in other states and even in other countries. Often planted in tidy rows, meant to impress, to add a touch of paradise to places far from the tropics. They were curated, not commonplace.

It was not until much later that I understood what the palm tree really meant to me. Somehow, this humble tree had become a symbol—of home, of continuity, of calm. Wherever I was, no matter what was happening in my life, spotting a palm grounded me. It brought me back to something solid.

For me, the palm embodies: patience, strength, and steadiness. It stood tall in my memories and in real life—unbothered by storms, unchanged by time.

  1. The palm trees are magnificent! I’m just an amateur when it comes to photography. I’m a landscape artist.
